Uma vacina contra a cárie é uma vacina experimental que tem como objetivo a prevenção de cáries dentárias (cáries), visando as bactérias responsáveis pela cárie dentária, em particular o Streptococcus mutans. Esta bactéria é a principal responsável pela formação da placa bacteriana e pela produção de ácido que leva à desmineralização do esmalte dentário. A vacina funciona estimulando o sistema imunitário do corpo a produzir anticorpos que podem neutralizar o S. mutans ou bloquear a sua capacidade de aderir à superfície do dente, prevenindo assim os passos iniciais da formação da cárie.A investigação está em curso e, embora promissoras, as vacinas contra a cárie ainda não estão disponíveis para utilização pública. Continuam a existir desafios no desenvolvimento de uma vacina que possa ser eficaz e segura para uma utilização generalizada, especialmente porque a cárie dentária é influenciada por vários factores, como a dieta, a higiene oral e a genética. No entanto, o desenvolvimento de tais vacinas poderia potencialmente revolucionar os cuidados dentários e reduzir significativamente o peso global da cárie dentária.
