يتناول الكتاب تاريخ كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة، ومدى تأثيره على أبرز الكُتّاب والأعمال الأدبية الغربية بعد نشره كاملاً في الغرب من خلال الترجمة في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر. كما يتناول الكتاب ترجمات كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة، إلى الإنجليزية خاصة، ومدى مصداقيتها وقربها أو بعدها عن النص الأصلي. ويتناول الكتاب أيضاً تقنيات السرد في كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة، وأسبقية هذه التقنيات في الظهور على الساحة الأدبية. ومع ذلك لم تتم الإشارة لتلك التقنيات في الغرب، خاصة أثناء ظهور تقنيات السرد المسماة بـ 'حكاية الحكاية' Metafiction ، التي تعدّها النظرية الأدبية الغربية من نتاج الستينيات والسبعينيات من القرن العشرين المنصرم. ويقدّم الكتاب شرحاً وافياً لماهية 'حكاية الحكاية'، وبيان لتقنياتها المتعددة، ولتنظيرها (دخولها مسار النظرية الأدبية الغربيّة). ويتناول أبرز كُتّاب الغرب الذين تبنوا بعض تطبيقات 'حكاية الحكاية 'المختلفة. ويذكر أبرز النقاد الذين درسوا تقنيات 'حكاية الحكاية'. ويستعرض الكتاب أيضاً مسيرة الأديب المصري نجيب محفوظ الأدبية وتطورها، ويناقش روايته القصيرة المكثفة: ليالي ألف ليلة؛ لأن كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة يمثل القاعدة والأصل لرواية محفوظ ليالي ألف ليلة، بالإضافة إلى تبني محفوظ لعدد من تقنيات سرد كتاب الليالي الأصلي وشخصياته. فرواية نجيب محفوظ رواية حديثة تتبنى تقنيات 'حكاية الحكاية'، ويستعرض الكتاب مسيرة الكاتب الشمال أمريكي (جون بارث) الأدبية ومدى تأثرها بتقنيات السرد في كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة، وبشخصية شهرزاد بشكل خاص. ويناقش الكتاب مجموعة جون بارث القصصية TEN NIGHTS AND A NIGHT: ELEVEN STORIES، ومدى ارتباطها بكتاب الليالي الأصلي وتقنياته. ويختتم الكتاب بالدعوة إلى توسيع نطاق النظرية الأدبية (الغربية) لكي تشمل الكتب العالمية مثل كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة نظراً لتأثيره المهول على الأدب العالمي، وتفرد تقنيات السرد فيه، وأسبقية ظهورها.
