After 45 years of forced absence, the writer returns to Syria. He tries to retrieve the city he thought he had forgotten, only to discover that its streets and alleys are engraved in his heart, that he can walk them with his eyes closed. Neighborhoods-Al-Salihiyyeh, Sheikh Mohieddine, the house where he once lived as a young man, Damascus University... He searches for his old friendships, only to be shocked that many have gone: some died, some emigrated, and one of them lost the ability to speak. His wandering leads him to Al-Rawda Café, which has become the meeting place of those returning after the fall of the regime, where he meets friends and acquaintances. Throughout this journey, he evokes names from culture, poetry, art, and political struggle... He documents the conditions of those who remained and those who returned, the state of intellectuals, women, public taste, architecture, and public life. He resurrects places and times in Syria and beyond. In chapters that begin with poetic openings, told in a tender narrative voice wavering between longing and ache, the narrator traverses Damascus and the surrounding cities like a spirit dissolved into the body of the city-without nostalgia for the fall of the former regime, but with the gaze of someone who understands that nations need time to heal and flourish again.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
