يختلف المسلمون عموماً في طريقة فهمهم التاريخية لمعركة كربلاء التي وقعت في العاشر من محرم عام (61هـ/ أكتوبر 680م)، والتي قتل فيها الحسين حفيد النبي محمد (ص)، وكذلك الحال بالنسبة لمعركة صفين والجمل ومعارك أخرى راح ضحيتها آلاف المسلمين نتيجة خلافات على الحكم وأحقية خلافة رسول الله محمد (ص)، وباختلافهم هذا يختلفون أيضاً في كيفية توصيف الأحداث وآثارها والمراد من طرائق إحيائها بشكل سنوي في مناسبات تغمرها المراسيم ذات الطابع الطقوسي. وبتعدد هذا الاختلاف في الفهم، وطريقة الانتصار لحفيد النبي وآل بيته، وبتعدد الآراء الدينية والاجتماعية من الأحداث، تتعدد الخطابات.لقد أنتجت الاختلافات في الفهم على مقتل الحسين، أربعة أنواع من الخطابات، وهي: خطابان عاطفيان وهما: خطاب القرب (بهدف الاستعانة)، وخطاب الحب (بهدف الشفاعة)، وخطابان تشريعيان وهما: خطاب المسؤولية (بهدف صيانة الأمانة)، وخطاب الترابط أو صف الصفوف (بهدف الاتفاق)، وجميع هذه الخطابات الأربعة ولا سيما الخطابات التشريعية تعبر عن الولاء الذي فيه إخلاص وانتماء، فأما الإخلاص فهو مأصول للنبي محمد (ص)، وأما الانتماء فيه انتساب لفكرة الإعلان عن الرفض التي تفجرت في ذهن الحسين قبل مقتله، والسياق التاريخي لقصة ثورته التي أحياها أتباعه على مر الزمان.
