تكمن أهمية هذه الرواية في أنها الأخيرة التي كتبها الروائي المعروف قبل رحيله (2023)، ثم صدرت بعد وفاته بعام.فيها، يتحدث خالد خليفة عن مدينة اللاذقية في سوريا، بشوارعها وأزقتها، ومعالمها التي شوّه معظمها الفساد الإداري وصفقات المقاولين. ينعي المدينة من خلال موت أحلام شبابها. هم شلة موسيقيين وشعراء وراقصة حاولوا إعادة بث الحياة في مدينةٍ تموت لكنّهم كانوا على موعد مع الخيبات القاتلة. فلا أحلامهم الموسيقية تحققت، ولا قصص حبهم عاشت، ولا أفضى مستقبلهم إلى الإنجازات التي تمنوها. هم شباب مهزومون: يارا ركضت خلف حلمها بالرقص حتى كندا حيث التهمتها الحياة وشردتها، وروني لم يستبقها كما يجدر بعاشق أن يفعل، كان وظل من بعدها أكثر اكتئابًا من أن يدافع عن حياته. ماريانا هربت من حبها الحارق لسام بأن حرقت حياتها. سام ظلّ ممزقًا بين توقعات العائلة منه وانتزاع بعض السلطة عبر محاباة السلطة، وبين بوب مارلي وحياة الصعاليك. لكلٍّ من أبطال الرواية، ''المسوخ'' كما تطلق عليهم صديقتهم منال، معاناته، تسلخاته، وخيبته، ولكلٍّ منهم وهمٌ ابتلعه في نهاية الحكاية. The importance of this novel lies within the fact that it was the last work the famous novelist wrote before his passing (2023), it was released a year after his death.In the novel, Khaled Khalifa talks about the city of Latakia in Syria with its streets, alleys and features that were mostly distorted by administrative corruption and contractor deals. He mourns the city through the death of its youth’s dreams. They’re a bunch of musicians and poets and a dancer who tried to bring life back into a dying city but were met with fatal disappointments. Their musical dreams didn’t come true, nor did their love stories make it and neither did their future lead to the accomplishments they had wished for. They are a defeated youth: Yara went after her dream of dancing all the way to Canada where life chewed her up and scared her off; Roni didn’t jump the gun as a lover should, he was and remained even more so depressed afterwards that he was unable to defend his own life. Mariana ran away from her burning love for Sam by burning her life away. Sam remained torn between his family’s expectations from him and seizing some power through favoritism; he was also torn between Bob Marley and punk life. All the heroes of this story, 'freaks' as their friend Manal calls them, struggle through their own suffering, breakdowns and disappointments and are each blinded by illusions that take their toll on them in the end.
