تجري أحداث هذه الرواية على هامش الحرب السوريّة، وتحديداً في مدينة اللاذقية الساحليّة. هناك، تعيش علياء حياةً عاديّة خارج سياق المخطّطات المُستقيمة التي يتّبعها الناس لتحقيق أهدافٍ معيّنة. ستلتقي بلوكاس، الشاب الروسي الذي يعمل طيّاراً حربيّاً في قاعدة حميميم العسكريّة بعدما تخلّى عن حلمه بأن يُصبح لاعب شطرنج. أمّا بديع فلم يتخلّ عن حلمه، إذ صار ممثّلاً مسرحيّاً على طريقته؛ يحيا يوميّاته كما لو أنّه على خشبة مسرح يراها هو وحده. لا يكتب راهيم حسّاوي عن الأحداث الكبرى أو عن مراكز المدن، ولا عن الحيوات التي تُلائم السير البطوليّة. يكتب عن الأحداث الكُبرى فقط حين تتسلّل إلى يوميّات الناس كأصداءٍ خافتة، أو حين تُخلّف فراغاً شاسعاً يلتهم المدن ويحدّ من مساحتها لتصبح بحجم بيتٍ. في هذه الرواية نقرأ عن الوجوه التي تتآكل بفضل الضجر والوحدة، عن الرغبات التي اعتقد أصحابها أنّها انطفأت إلى غير رجعة، وعن اللعب كدافع أوّل للإنسان منذ ولادته. The events of this story take place on the margins of the Syrian war, specifically in coastal Lattakia. There, Aliaa lives a normal life away from the clear-cut plans people follow to achieve certain objectives. She’ll meet Lucas, a Russian young man working as a fighter pilot in the Hmeimim military base after having given up his dream to become a chess player. Badii, however, didn’t give up on his dream, instead, he became a stage actor in his own way; he leads a day-to-day life as if he were standing on a stage that’s only visible to him.Rahim Hassawi doesn’t write about major events or city hubs, nor does he write about those whose lives make up heroic stories. He only writes about major events when they creep into the daily lives of people like low echoes, or when they leave behind a wide gap consuming cities and limiting their space as they become as small as a house. In this story, we read about the worn-out faces from boredom and loneliness, about desires that were thought extinguished for good by their holders and about play as man’s first motive since birth.
