Tanto os Objectivos de Desenvolvimento do Milénio (ODM) como os Objectivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) têm a saúde como uma componente crítica para a realização do desenvolvimento global. A utilização dos serviços de saúde materna é uma questão de saúde importante relacionada com a sobrevivência materna e infantil, uma vez que reduz a mortalidade e a morbilidade maternas e melhora o bem-estar das mães e dos seus filhos antes, durante e após o parto. Considerando a baixa utilização dos serviços de saúde materna, especialmente na África Subsariana, torna-se importante compreender o que determina a utilização. Este livro procura expor os factores determinantes da utilização dos serviços de saúde materna, especialmente num contexto de escassez de recursos, e fornece recomendações sobre possíveis medidas a tomar para aumentar a utilização dos serviços de saúde materna com o objetivo de reduzir a mortalidade e a morbilidade maternas.
