Num ambiente em que as tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TIC) invadiram todos os campos da informação, os utilizadores das bibliotecas estão a mudar a forma como procuram informação para os seus estudos ou investigações. Dado este facto e tendo em conta a atual situação de escassez orçamental nas bibliotecas, existe uma necessidade crescente de avaliar continuamente os recursos bibliotecários e conhecer as preferências dos utilizadores das bibliotecas. Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de destacar a utilização de revistas eletrónicas em comparação com revistas impressas nas bibliotecas académicas de Abu Dhabi. O estudo concentra-se no que os membros do corpo docente e os estudantes de pós-graduação preferem usar e quais são os fatores que controlam essa utilização. Ele se concentra particularmente em como os utilizadores usam, citam e avaliam revistas eletrônicas e impressas durante o processo de pesquisa. Este estudo também explora os problemas que os utilizadores enfrentam ao usar cada formato de revista.
