Se o objetivo é gerar uma mudança real no modelo económico de produção e implementar uma economia circular bem fundamentada, na qual os componentes de reduzir, reutilizar e reciclar são considerados, é essencial desenvolver um sistema que garanta uma classificação e quantificação adequadas dos resíduos e subprodutos agrícolas, priorizando os produtos com maior margem de produção a nível nacional para identificar os níveis mais elevados de utilização e produção ligados aos biomateriais ou seus derivados relacionados com a investigação, desenvolvimento e inovação no contexto da bioeconomia.Um dos problemas mais graves para os sectores agrícola e agroindustrial equatorianos é o excesso de resíduos gerados, mas sobretudo o seu uso inadequado. A mucilagem açucarada é desperdiçada no processo de fermentação aeróbia e anaeróbia da semente de cacau. Esta matéria orgânica açucarada (9060 toneladas de mucilagem por ano) gera resíduos e poluição para o sector do cacau, um subproduto que pode ser utilizado para produzir álcool ou outros produtos agro-industriais, como herbicidas orgânicos, geleias ou compotas.
