Neste ensaio, originalmente preparado enquanto estudante de pós-graduação na Universidade da Califórnia, Irvine, no âmbito da Escola de Ecologia Social, Departamento de Criminologia, Direito e Sociedade, é abordada a questão do consentimento informado relativamente aos riscos e danos culturais da recolha de amostras de dados genéticos por cientistas, por exemplo, sangue, saliva e cabelo, de índios americanos nativos para as suas comunidades tribais mais alargadas. Verificou-se que as tribos de índios americanos nativos não estão muitas vezes bem informadas sobre os danos e riscos culturais da participação em esforços de recolha de dados de material genético de ADN, ou seja, amostras de sangue, saliva e cabelo, recolhidas junto dos membros individuais da sua tribo.
