Un laser est un appareil qui émet de la lumière par un processus d’amplification optique basé sur l’émission stimulée de rayonnement électromagnétique. Le terme 'laser' est un acronyme de 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation' (amplification de la lumière par émission stimulée de radiations). Les lasers ont révolutionné les traitements dentaires depuis trois décennies et demie du vingtième siècle. En 1960, Theodore Maiman a inventé le laser à rubis. Depuis lors, le laser est l’une des technologies les plus captivantes de la pratique dentaire. Les lasers ont été utilisés dans la thérapie parodontale initiale, dans les procédures de chirurgie buccale et dans le traitement des implants. La pratique de la chirurgie buccale et maxillo-faciale inclut l’utilisation de lasers depuis le milieu des années 1960. Les systèmes laser et leur application en dentisterie, et plus particulièrement en chirurgie buccale, s’améliorent rapidement aujourd’hui.
