Abstract The thesis are a corporate work of Fachhochschule Wismar and RST-DASA-GmbH. The subject of this paper is necessary to complete the development of Smart Sensors for fire-detection. The following things are ready at the beginning: A tin-oxide sensor array and the classification with an Artificial Neural Network. This solution is the state-of-the-art for an Electronic Nose. Electronic Noses (figure 1-1) are being developed as systems for the automated detection and classification of odours, vapours and gases. An Electronic Nose is generally composed of a chemical sensing system (e.g. sensor array) and a pattern recognition system (e.g. Artificial Neural Network). An Artificial Neural Network is an information processing paradigm that was inspired by the way biological nervous systems, such as the brain, process information. Their most important advantage is in solving problems that are too complex for conventional technologies; problems that do not have an algorithmic solution or for which an algorithmic solution is too complex to be found. Artificial neural network are well suited to problems that people are good at solving but computers are not (e.g. pattern r
