Le donne che si stanno riprendendo da abusi subiti durante l’infanzia e che hanno successivamente fatto uso di sostanze sono una popolazione unica. Quattro principali aree di ricerca delineano le idee che hanno dato origine a questo studio. La prima area ha esplorato i fondamenti esistenziali del trauma infantile. Ricerche passate e recenti riguardanti il fenomeno rendono il lettore consapevole dei vari tipi di esperienze che costituiscono il trauma infantile, nonché degli effetti potenzialmente dannosi che possono svilupparsi come risultato dell’esperienza del trauma infantile. La seconda area di ricerca descrive il significato, lo scopo e la giustificazione dell’approccio metodologico esistenziale-fenomenologico al trattamento del trauma infantile. La metodologia E-P aiuta a fornire un quadro più completo, con un’enfasi sulla descrizione e la comprensione del mondo esperienziale delle donne che hanno subito un trauma infantile con conseguente abuso di sostanze. Una terza area di ricerca ha esplorato il fenomeno dell’abuso di sostanze e delle donne. Infine, questo studio esplora la nozione di recupero e ascolta le partecipanti che condividono quelle esperienze vissute.
