Une passion incompatible raconte l’histoire dramatisée des derniers trois mois dans la vie du poète activiste, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Au printemps 1822, Percy et sa deuxième épouse, Mary Woolstonecroft, l’auteur du roman célèbre FRANKENSTEIN, accompagnés par sa demi-sœur, Claire, ont loué une villa sur la côte toscane. Ils furent rejoints par Jane et Edward Williams et plus tard par l’aventurier cornouaillais Edward Trelawny. Les rapports entre Mary et son mari se sont dégradés après la mort précoce de deux de leurs trois enfants. Percy partageait son affection avec les deux sœurs, ce qui créait une tension considérable, si on ajoute le penchant général du poète pour les jolies femmes. Claire avait donné naissance à des filles avec Lord Byron et Shelley, un fait supplémentaire contre la paix précaire du ménage. Trelawny persuada une connaissance de construire un voilier pour le poète. Quelques semaines plus tard un orage violent fit couler le bateau. Percy et Williams se noyaient. Les restes du corps du poète furent incinérés sur la plage en présence de Byron et Trelawny. Nigel Patten est né près de Londres. Il y a cinquante ans il quitta l’Angleterre pour s’établir en Suisse, où il enseigne de l’anglais dans une école internationale réputée à la montagne. Il pratique des activités de montagne et de la mer en Grèce, voyage beaucoup sur tous les continents, et participe activement dans une troupe de théâtre amateur, comme acteur et metteur en scène. Nigel Patten a publié plusieurs romans historiques en anglais avec traduction française.
