Cet ouvrage interroge la représentation de l’échec national en Afrique dans The Famished Road de Ben Okri et Wizard of the Crow de Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Il invite les lecteurs à lire ces récits d’échec national avec un regard critique nouveau afin de mettre au jour les nuisances liées au genre qui pourraient autrement passer inaperçues. Il met donc le lecteur au défi de sortir de sa zone de confort de lecture traditionnelle pour se livrer à une mauvaise lecture . L’ouvrage soutient que la satire de l’échec national employée par les deux récits à travers le réalisme magique est fortement genrée. Si le réalisme magique est un outil puissant entre les mains des auteurs pour représenter les ogres égoïstes de l’État postcolonial en Afrique, il tombe dans le piège de féminiser ces ogres.
