La rinascita dell’alchimia nella narrativa moderna ha compiuto un passo avanti nel postmodernismo. È interessante notare che la tradizione alchemica della letteratura inglese, evidente nelle opere di Chaucer, Shakespeare e Jonson, attraverso i romantici fino all’età moderna, ha trovato un’ulteriore continuazione nell’opera fondamentale di Paulo Coelho, *L’alchimista*, nel *Codice Da Vinci* di Dan Brown e, in modo ancora più marcato, nei romanzi di *Harry Potter* di J. K. Rowling. Il presente lavoro dimostra che la serie di Harry Potter non è una letteratura che promuove la magia nera o la stregoneria, né costituisce di per sé un discorso politico. D’altra parte, il tema sotteso ai libri di Harry Potter è la trasformazione personale che conduce alla realizzazione di sé, ciò che in questo lavoro viene definito l’alchimia dell’anima. Alla luce del postmodernismo, la serie di sette romanzi è stata analizzata e il risultato è sorprendentemente rivelatore: la serie di Harry Potter offre una seria critica al postmodernismo come filosofia e la rinascita dell’alchimia, sia come filosofia che come psicologia, ha sovvertito e detronizzato il postmodernismo dalla sua egemonia; per di più, la magia ha minacciato di sostituirlo!
