Il Ruanda è geologicamente situato nella cintura di Karagwe Ankole, nel centro dell’Africa orientale. La cintura di Karagwe Ankole (KAB) è separata dalla cintura di Kibaran (KIB) da una terrana rusiana paleoproterozoica ed entrambe formano cinture orogeniche mesoproterozoiche dell’Africa centrale. La parte della KAB situata in Ruanda contiene la maggior parte di cassiterite, columbite-tantalite e wolframite. Questi minerali sono stati definiti 3T e si trovano in pegmatiti Nb-Ta-Sn, depositi idrotermali di vene di quarzo W-Sn e greiseni Sn, che sono componenti di un sistema metallogenico composito legato alla generazione del granito (G4-granito o granito fertile) avvenuta a 986±10Ma. La composizione del fluido idrotermale è H2O-CO2-CH4-N2-NaCl, ed è caratterizzato da una salinità da bassa a moderata (2,7-14,2 eq. wt.%NaCl), da una pressione elevata (~100MPa) e da una temperatura mesotermica (~300°C). La composizione isotopica dei fluidi ha indicato che è molto più probabile che le vene di quarzo mineralizzate si siano formate dal fluido sottoposto principalmente a processi metamorfici.
