Al fin el lector puede disfrutar en castellano de este libro de viajes de Mark Twain que se publicó en 1880. Está basado en unas vacaciones de 15 meses por Europa central y los Alpes que tomó en compañía de su amigo el reverendo Joseph Twitchell (llamado Harris en el libro) en el finales de la década de 1870.Su viaje comienza en el suroeste de Alemania, abarcando observaciones en Heidelberg, Mannheim, Baden-Baden y la Selva Negra. Continúan a través de Suiza y el este de Francia, y finalmente llegan al norte de Italia. El libro, que consta de 50 capítulos, entrelaza observaciones y anécdotas con historias humorísticas y leyendas locales, algunas de ellas inventadas. Una de las historias más conocidas es 'el grajo azul de Baker'. Al final del libro hay varios apéndices, que describen a los porteros de los hoteles, el castillo de Heidelberg y el más célebre de estos ensayos es 'El horrible idioma alemán'. Este libro es una hilarante colección de observaciones y comentarios escritos con el ingenio y el garbo habituales de Twain.
