El 14 de julio de 1099, los cruzados tomaron Jerusalén y fundaron el Reino Latino de Jerusalén. Ni siquiera pasó un siglo, cuando el viernes 2 de octubre de 1187, Saladino recapturó Jerusalén para el Islam. Entre esas dos fechas, existió un reino gobernado por cristianos en Palestina. Sumergido en un mundo musulmán, influido por el Imperio Bizantino, sujeto a un flujo constante de cruzados desde Europa, el Reino Latino de Jerusalén se definió como un crisol de culturas e ideas. Muy pronto la flexibilidad y tolerancia hacia otras culturas, prevalentes en el Reino, comenzó a chocar contra la intransigencia de los cruzados recién llegados. Debido a la guerra y a las condiciones insalubres que los hombres enfrentaban durante las campañas militares, las mujeres de la nobleza quedaban viudas muy jóvenes. Ricas y poderosas, tenían muchos pretendientes e invariablemente elegían al candidato más atractivo. De esta manera sus hijas eran aún más bellas, más cotizadas y se casaban con los caballeros más selectos entre todos los que llegaban. En una espiral de belleza y un torbellino de diversidad de ideas, se fundó un reino de conspiraciones.
