A través de su principal personaje, Jane, una periodista norteamericana que colabora con un magacín de Nueva York se plantea, a modo de balance, lo que el ser humano ha hecho en el último siglo. Aunque se desarrolla en época actual, muchos recuerdos del pasado se utilizan como sujetos activos para su análisis.
