Gli idrocarburi, principale fonte di materiali plastici, rischiano di esaurirsi. Sebbene le materie plastiche offrano vantaggi quali l’elevata resistenza agli agenti atmosferici, la facilità d’uso e i costi contenuti, la loro gestione a fine vita pone un problema. Questa tesi esplora l’uso di un polimero naturale, la cellulosa, come alternativa sostenibile.La cellulosa, estratta da legno, cotone, ecc. può essere modificata mediante esterificazione per diventare apolare. Combinata con il diacrilato di poliuretano in percentuali variabili, forma materiali compositi che sono biodegradabili in condizioni naturali (suolo, luce solare, ecc.). Questi compositi presentano una buona resistenza al vapore acqueo e ai solventi non polari, ma una scarsa resistenza ai solventi a media polarità.I principali fattori che influenzano la resistenza all’umidità sono : Lunghezza della catena di carbonio. Ostacolo sterico, determinato dal tipo di estere. Il grado di sostituzione.Questo studio evidenzia il potenziale della cellulosa come soluzione ecologica per ridurre la dipendenza dalle plastiche a base di idrocarburi.
