Al ajiaco, la conga y las bellas mujeres cubanas, hay que añadir el alborozo y el júbilo que los cubanos siempre han sentido por la poesía. ¿Qué mejores exponentes de los poetas cubanos pueden presentarse que aquellos que el público o el Congreso de la República han escogido a lo largo de medio siglo como Poetas Nacionales Cubanos? Este libro, sin soslayo de muchos otros grandes versificadores, despliega con detalle la obra poética de José María Heredia (1803-1839), Julián del Casal (1863-1893), Agustín Acosta (1886-1979)y Nicolás Guillén (1902-1989), los más grandes trovadores del parnaso cubano. Los cuatro poetas nacionales son representativos de una literatura cubana que desde el siglo XIX ha sido posiblemente la más fecunda, distinguida y prestigiosa de Hispanoamérica y del mundo de habla castellana.
