Considerado el más importante dramaturgo noruego y uno de los autores que más ha influido en el teatro contemporáneo, Henrik Ibsen firmó quizá con Un enemigo del pueblo su obra más controvertida. Su protagonista, el Doctor Stockmann, denuncia que las aguas del balneario, principal fuente de ingresos del pueblo, están corrompidas y son un peligro para la salud. Las fuerzas sociales del pueblo tratan de ocultarlo y él se queda solo en su denuncia, pues la verdad es incómoda para mucha gente. Más allá de lo anecdótico de la trama, lo interesante y que sigue suscitando polémica es la tesis de que el enemigo más peligroso de la razón y de la libertad es la opinión de la mayoría. Para Ibsen la mayoría no siempre tiene la razón, muy al contrario, nunca la tiene, es la minoría la que la posee, pues «la mayoría tiene la fuerza, pero no tiene la razón», porque «¿quiénes son la mayoría en el sufragio? ¿Los estúpidos o los inteligentes?». Sin embargo, «¿Qué importa que tengas la razón si no tienes el poder?», le contesta a su marido la señora Stockmann. Una obra inmortal sobre la corrupción del poder y la manipulación de los medios informativos al servicio de ese mismo poder, por fin en su versión original, sin adaptaciones, tal como la escribió Ibsen. 10
