El enfoque relacional en el psicoanálisis se desarrolló a partir del quiebre de la hegemonía de la teoría clásica, y aunque aún está creciendo y todavía hay una gran diversidad y un animado debate dentro de su comunidad, el paradigma relacional se presenta como una nueva integración de conceptos y perspectivas psicoanalíticas que ofrece una alternativa formidable a la teorización psicoanalítica clásica. Aunque en los últimos años la teoría clásica o convencional se ha movido hacia una dirección relacional creciente, hay diferencias significativas entre versiones actuales de la teoría clásica y lo que es referido como psicoanálisis relacional. Pero ¿qué es la teoría relacional? ¿Qué es un analista relacional? ¿Cuál es la sustancia? Tras un resumen de la esencia de la teoría relacional, se documenta la formación de la orientación relacional y de cómo fue influenciada por un número de fuerzas sociales y culturales extra-analíticas. El psicoanálisis relacional no es una escuela de pensamiento uni-ficada o integrada, no posee una posición teórica singular, sino que se refiere a un grupo diverso de teorías que se enfocan en las relaciones personales, intrapersonales e interpersonales. El énfasis en las dimensiones relacionales del desarrollo y del tratamiento atraviesa todas las escuelas contemporáneas de psicoanálisis.
