Hace años Michael Rockland trabajó como adjunto cultural en la embajada norteamericana en Madrid, pero ni física ni espiritualmente se ha despedido nunca de nuestro país. A pesar de haber escrito trece libros, «Un diplomático americano en la España de Franco» es su primera obra sobre sus vivencias de aquella época. En uno de los capítulos narra cómo pasó un día acompañando al reverendo Martin Luther King por Madrid; en otro cómo su hijo pequeño fue elegido para representar el papel del hijo del doctor Zhivago en la famosa película de David Lean; en otro cómo se las ingenió para no tener que estrechar la mano de Franco en una recepción diplomática; en otro cómo vivió el incidente de las bombas de Palomares... En este volumen Rockland compara y contrasta las culturas norteamericana y española, y sugiere que ambos países pueden aprender mucho uno del otro.
