Umysł i metaforaZrozumienie ludzkiego umysłu jest niemożliwe bez uwzględnienia roli metafory. Metafora nie jest jedynie narzędziem literackim, ale podstawowym narzędziem myślenia, języka, poznania, a nawet doświadczenia. Ludzki umysł nieustannie polega na metaforze, aby zrozumieć złożone, abstrakcyjne lub nieznane pojęcia. Dzieje się tak, ponieważ wiele pojęć, z którymi spotykamy się w życiu codziennym, a także w nauce i filozofii, nie jest namacalnych ani bezpośrednio obserwowalnych. Metafora służy jako pomost poznawczy między dwoma domenami pojęciowymi: domeną źródłową, która jest zwykle znana, konkretna i możliwa do wyobrażenia, a domeną docelową, która jest często bardziej abstrakcyjna, złożona lub nieznana. Cechy domeny źródłowej są systematycznie mapowane na domenę docelową, aby ułatwić zrozumienie. W metaforach takich jak 'jego serce jest kamienne', słowo kamień przekazuje cechy takie jak twardość, chłód i brak emocji, które są przenoszone na serce - symboliczne centrum uczuć i emocji. Dzięki temu metaforycznemu odwzorowaniu słuchacz z łatwością pojmuje pojęcie okrucieństwa lub emocjonalnej obojętności.
