Weltweit spielen KMU zwar eine wichtige Rolle in der Wirtschaft, sind jedoch für schwerwiegende Umweltschäden wie den übermäßigen Verbrauch natürlicher Ressourcen, den Ausstoß von Treibhausgasen und den Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt verantwortlich. Um diese Situation besser einschätzen zu können, wurde diese analytische Untersuchung durchgeführt. Sie besteht darin, die KMU zu charakterisieren, ihre Bereitschaft zur Einführung von Umweltmanagementsystemen zu ermitteln und einen Plan für die Einführung dieser Systeme vorzuschlagen. In einem gemischten Ansatz sind die Untersuchung und Analyse bestimmter von anderen Autoren vorgeschlagener Ansätze unter anderem die Strategien, die zur Erreichung dieser Ziele geführt haben. Dies führte zur Identifizierung von 52 KMU. 32 % der Arbeitnehmer haben einen Hochschulabschluss und 67 % erhalten keine Schulungen zum Thema Umweltschutz. Was ihre Bereitschaft zur Einführung von Umweltmanagementsystemen angeht, wurden mehrere Schwachstellen festgestellt, darunter das Fehlen von Umweltzielen und das Nichtvorhandensein von Umweltpolitiken. Am Ende wurde ein Schema für die Einführung von Umweltmanagementsystemen in KMU vorgeschlagen.
