O autismo é a doença neuropsiquiátrica mais grave da infância. O autismo infantil é uma deficiência complexa do desenvolvimento, com início de sintomas que aparecem tipicamente durante os primeiros 3 anos da infância e continuam ao longo da vida. Cerca de 75-80% dos indivíduos com autismo infantil funcionam ao nível dos atrasados mentais. O autismo atípico é por vezes confundido com o rótulo de autismo de alto funcionamento para designar uma versão mais ligeira do autismo. O autismo tornou-se uma das epidemias infantis mais generalizadas de que há registo na história. Os primeiros pontos de vista sobre o autismo infantil centravam-se nas causas psicogénicas, como a interação deficiente entre pais e filhos e a psicopatologia parental. No ano 2000, o autismo infantil foi conceptualizado como uma perturbação biológica com múltiplas etiologias.
