O livro examina criticamente as crenças, normas, valores e filosofias que regem a herança de terras, a importância da terra entre os Abagusii e visões filosóficas avançadas sobre o caminho a seguir para acabar com práticas culturais que prejudicam a igualdade de género e o desenvolvimento. Avaliou as bases epistemológicas, éticas e socioeconómicas tradicionais da discriminação de género, no que diz respeito à herança entre os Abagusii, com o objetivo de mostrar se os fundamentos tradicionais estão ou não em conflito com o quadro democrático prevalecente no Quénia. O estudo levantou a hipótese de que proibir as mulheres de herdar terras ou património familiar é inconsistente com qualquer esforço dos governos africanos (incluindo o Quénia) para criar um ambiente propício ao desenvolvimento e para demonstrar se a discriminação de género no direito à herança da terra constitui ou não uma forma de injustiça social.
