A obra se divide em três partes: a primeira dedicada a história do açúcar, a segunda focada em alguns alimentos, por fim, a terceira parte refere-se a algumas bebidas. Cada capítulo segue algumas características parecidas: uma introdução, informações biológicas sobre plantas, pois excetuando-se o leite, todos os outros alimentos e bebidas aqui abordados são de origem vegetal; então se desenvolve um relato histórico partindo da Pré-história ou da Antiguidade indo até a Contemporaneidade, passando por temas sobre economia, política, expansão geográfica, empregos desses alimentos para a saúde, as vezes para a magia. Aborda-se também casos em que alguns desses alimentos e bebidas estavam associados com crenças religiosas. Passamos também pela industrialização, entre outras características.Dessa forma, apesar desse livro ser essencialmente uma obra de história cultural sobre a alimentação, ainda assim, temas da história social, política, econômica, religiosa, história global, além de temas sobre filologia, mitologia, sociologia, antropologia foram abordados também, permitindo que os leitores através de um linguajar simples possam se encantar com as histórias de algumas das mais populares comidas e bebidas do mundo, vindo a conhecer os impactos causados pelas mesmas na História.
