A tomada de decisões reprodutivas sempre foi uma questão de interesse filosófico. O interesse filosófico por ela remonta, pelo menos, à República de Platão. Na era contemporânea, porém, o interesse filosófico criou divisões entre indivíduos, Estado e comentadores quanto à forma como os direitos dos indivíduos à tomada de decisões reprodutivas são vistos e à maneira como devem ser exercidos e protegidos. Com isso, os agentes morais individuais terão reconhecido o direito de proteger os seus estilos de vida reprodutivos. Assim, o único momento em que o público deve interferir no gozo desses direitos é quando o exercício dos direitos reprodutivos ultrapassa o âmbito privado dos indivíduos, criando efeitos negativos ou danos ao público e ao feto na fase de viabilidade.
