A palavra ’amaZioni’ é tirada da palavra Zulu que significa ’o povo de Sião’. Esta organização missionária foi inicialmente conhecida como a Missão Mahon e mais tarde tornou-se nos Ministérios Evangélicos de Sião de África (ZEMA). A ZEMA tem uma relação estreita com a Igreja Católica Cristã de Sião, fundada por John Alexander Dowie em 1896. Os missionários da ZEMA utilizam esta relação que têm com a igreja de Sião para serem aceites pelos líderes da igreja amaZioni que, por sua vez, remontam a sua história à Igreja Católica Cristã de Sião.
