Toen in 1881 het verkeerde gerucht zich verspreidde dat August Bebel dood was, schreef Marx: 'Het is verschrikkelijk, het grootste ongeluk voor onze partij! Hij was een uniek fenomeen binnen de Duitse (je zou kunnen zeggen, binnen de Europese) arbeidersklasse.'August Bebel (1840-1913) was één van de grondleggers van de Duitse socialistische partij. Hij stond in nauw contact met Marx en Engels, met wie hij uitvoerig correspondeerde. Deze autobiografie biedt een inkijk in het ontstaan en de vroege ontwikkeling van de georganiseerde Duitse arbeidersbeweging. Dit was in een interessante periode, van de eerste uitbarstingen van de Parijse Commune over het verbod op de socialistische partij onder Bismarck tot de voorbereiding van de partij op een fenomenale groei na het opheffen van het verbod.Bebel beschrijft daarbij ook de discussies en interne debatten, waaronder de standpunten van Marx en Engels zoals hun kritieken op het programma van Gotha bij de eenmaking van de Duitse socialistische partij in 1875.
