Die Studie wurde in der Gemeinde Lábrea-AM durchgeführt, da diese Stadt vom ehemaligen Präsidenten José Sarney für die Einführung des Impfstoffs gegen Hepatitis B ausgewählt worden war, aufgrund des großen Ausbruchs, den die Stadt in den Jahren 1970 bis 1990 erlebt hatte und bei dem viele Menschen an der Krankheit gestorben waren. Die Situation war so gravierend, dass Lábrea aufgrund der Hepatitis B den Namen einer bestimmten Krankheit erhielt, nämlich „Febre Negra de Lábrea' (Schwarzes Fieber von Lábrea). Daher hat die Arbeit einen historischen Hintergrund, wobei das Thema mit der Verbreitung von Hepatitis B in der Gemeinde Lábrea Amazonas zwischen 1985 und 1995 zusammenhängt.
