A submarine is a 'boat'; a surface warship never is. A Sailor serves 'aboard,' 'on,' or 'is assigned to' a ship-but never 'in' one. The word 'Sailor' is capitalized when it refers to America’s own; the term 'dependent' is forbidden as derogatory in favor of 'family members.' And by direction of the Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet, the body of water is the 'Arabian Gulf,' not the 'Persian Gulf.' These are not idle preferences. They are the rulings of the U.S. Navy Style Guide, the official editorial reference that governs how the world’s most powerful navy talks about itself. This edition reproduces Version 17-4, dated March 22, 2017, the working standard maintained by the Navy’s public-affairs community-the Mass Communication Specialists, public affairs officers, and editors who staff the Office of Information under the Chief of Information (CHINFO). It is, by design, not a freestanding manual but a deliberate exception list. Its opening instruction sets the frame for everything that follows: Navy writers and editors are to follow the most recent edition of the Associated Press Stylebook except as noted here. What follows is a precise overlay of corrections and additions tailored to the particular demands of writing about the sea service-a specialized patch applied to a general-purpose standard. The guide is built in two halves. The first is a single alphabetical run of usage rulings, from '’A’ school' and 'abbreviations, acronyms' through the family of '-wide' compounds such as Navywide and fleetwide. Each entry is terse: a headword, a ruling, and often a realistic example-a strike fighter squadron deploying aboard a carrier, a flag flown at half-mast, a commanding officer welcoming visitors aboard a guided-missile cruiser. The second half abandons narrative for tabular reference: a long list of enlisted rate abbreviations (AB for Aviation Boatswain’s Mate, HM for Hospital Corpsman, YN for Yeoman, and dozens more), followed by rank-and-abbreviation tables for the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Air Force, with closing notes on plurals and the handling of retired officers. The result is at once a rulebook for prose and a lookup table for the hardware of rank and rating. Why does a single service need its own stylebook? Because precision and dignity ride on distinctions civilian readers rarely notice. The guide standardizes hull numbers, squadron abbreviations, and aircraft designations such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the SH-60B Sea Hawk; it dictates that 'USS' precedes a commissioned vessel but is dropped for ships before 1909 or after decommissioning; it bars nicknames and call signs from print. And in its smallest rulings it encodes institutional values-preferring 'woman' to 'female,' substituting 'crew member' and 'service members' for older gendered forms, reminding writers that 'midshipman' applies to women as well as men. It is a quiet study in how a vast, high-turnover institution manufactures a single, consistent public voice. This Nimble Books edition presents a faithful reproduction of the complete guide, enriched with a full editorial apparatus newly prepared for this volume. A Historical Context essay explains the document’s purpose, provenance, and version-stamped, living nature. Two complementary abstracts-an accessible plain-language summary and an advanced analytical reading of the guide as a controlled-vocabulary artifact-orient any reader. A Glossary, Indexes of persons, places, and concepts, and an original computational 'RKHS' knowledge-graph analysis situate the guide among related style and communications references. For journalists, communicators, military historians, librarians, veterans, and any reader fascinated by how bureaucracies convert culture, hierarchy, and even foreign policy into the seemingly neutral register of editorial style, this is an indispensable and unexpectedly revealing little book.
