Mercury is old enough to know better. Answering any phone with no Caller I.D. could be stupid or dangerous. College education had not taught street rules, but caution against interrupting his personal life is crucial. The caller could be from his twin brother, Maxwell, who plays pranks and games. A dyed-in-the-wool anti-academic. Despite separating over big differences, Mercury, now a university literature professor, feels torn, fearful, yet still connected. His twin brother’s psychic power advantages are outrageous. He has not forgotten youthful days. Among haunting memories was a California beach. Some boats crashed, people died, and Maxwell had just laughed, saying: 'Don’t worry, it’s natural. Dad says a little blood loss never hurts anybody. Mom says we are both special. We have gifts just like in those Bible stories. Such powers can be cultivated to do bigger things. It’s in our DNA.'However, older and with responsibilities, Mercury tries not to be forced into more misadventures. Why risk garnering attention from foreign or domestic authorities? True, he had promised his mother he would stick with his brother, 'Keep the peace.' But when it came to behavior threatening innocent people, he had drawn the line years ago. Blood is thicker than water, but he is determined to live or die with a clear conscience. Up to this point, life had been good. Yet, possessing weaker supernatural powers is a disadvantage to Maxwell, his brother.
