What happens when two systems separated by thousands of years behave in the same way?Twelve Pistons: A Structural History of Mesopotamia in Twelve Poems examines ancient Mesopotamian history through twelve compressed poetic compositions, each placing an observable automotive or physical system in structural correspondence with a historical system.Across the sequence, students encounter irrigation, specialized labor, long-distance trade, urban density, scribal education, inheritance, administrative calendars, diplomatic exchange, agriculture, imperial deportation, communication networks, and cultural continuity. Each is organized through a three-part structural tension: Control · Dependence · Vulnerability; Skill · Specialization · Interdependence; Need · Exchange · Exposure; and other relationships that reveal how complex systems operate under changing conditions. The automobile does not symbolize Mesopotamia. Instead, the poems ask students to examine what each system actually does. A roadway and an irrigation network may both create forms of control and dependence. Specialized engine components and specialized labor may both increase capability while producing interdependence. Material accumulation may sustain one process while eventually constraining another. The collection is written according to Absolute Composition, a compositional methodology developed by J. A. Gucci that organizes poetic form through observable systems, structural correspondence, pressure, threshold, and transformation rather than symbolic substitution. Language is compressed so that punctuation, lineation, white space, and omission participate in the structure of each composition.Designed for college and university students, professors, instructors, and educators working across the humanities, Twelve Pistons can support study in ancient history, literature, poetry, creative writing, composition, and interdisciplinary humanities.Rather than asking only what a poem means, Twelve Pistons begins with a different question:What does the system do?

The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
