Twelve Medieval Portions: A Structural History of the Medieval World in Twelve Poems examines the medieval world through twelve compressed poems organized in three movements: Binding, Mediation, and Reformation. The medieval world was not governed by a single structure. Authority was distributed among lords, monarchs, monasteries, towns, guilds, courts, ecclesiastical institutions, and local communities. These structures overlapped, competed, cooperated, and changed, producing forms of order that could persist without becoming uniform.Twelve Medieval Portions approaches this history structurally rather than chronologically. Binding examines durable relations established through land, oath, discipline, and custom. Mediation considers structures through which goods, membership, travelers, and knowledge pass. Reformation turns toward systems placed under pressure by fortification, demographic loss, corporate autonomy, fragmentation, and recombination. Each poem begins with a paradox triad: three related conditions whose interaction generates the structural problem of the poem. Across the sequence, these triads examine relations including land, obligation, and protection; oath, loyalty, and authority; custom, judgment, and order; gift, obligation, and redistribution; craft, regulation, and membership; mortality, scarcity, and bargaining; and fragmentation, recombination, and continuity. The poems are composed using Absolute Composition, a structural method developed by J. A. Gucci that asks first: How does this behave? Rather than treating images as symbols for historical ideas, the method attends to observable relations such as containment, pressure, repetition, separation, transfer, resistance, transformation, and persistence. Each poem also contains the behavior of an independently observable physical system drawn from the culinary arts. Baking, curing, clarifying, grinding, containing, separating, and recombining provide physical structures through which medieval systems can be examined. These processes are not reconstructions of medieval cooking or symbolic representations of medieval institutions. The culinary and historical systems remain independent, entering into correspondence only where they exhibit compatible behavior.Compression is central to the poems. Mechanisms may be omitted while their effects remain visible; white space and punctuation may carry structural operations; and physical processes need not be identified for their behavior to remain present.Across all twelve portions, one question governs the collection: How can a system remain coherent when authority is distributed among competing structures? The medieval world presented here is a field of relations repeatedly formed, mediated, contested, broken, and reorganized. Its continuity lies not in remaining unchanged, but in the capacity of its structures to persist through changing relations.
