In odontoiatria, non esiste un singolo materiale che sia ideale in natura e che soddisfi tutti i requisiti di un materiale ideale. Pertanto, la ricerca di un 'materiale da restauro ideale' continua, portando all’introduzione di materiali di nuova generazione. Questi vengono definiti 'materiali intelligenti'. I materiali intelligenti possono essere definiti come materiali progettati che hanno una o più proprietà che possono essere modificate in modo significativo e controllato da stimoli esterni, come stress, temperatura, umidità, pH e campi elettrici o magnetici.Questi materiali vengono anche definiti materiali reattivi. La scienza dei materiali non è più quella di una volta. Tradizionalmente i materiali utilizzati in odontoiatria erano progettati per essere passivi e inerti, cioè per avere un’interazione minima o nulla con i tessuti e i fluidi del corpo. I materiali utilizzati nella cavità orale venivano spesso giudicati in base alla loro capacità di sopravvivere senza interagire con l’ambiente orale. Lo scenario attuale è cambiato. Molti dei materiali avanzati all’avanguardia della scienza dei materiali sono funzionali. Sono chiamati a svolgere funzioni e a subire cambiamenti mirati. Svolgono un ruolo attivo nel funzionamento della struttura o del dispositivo.
