If you run into a turkey hunter on the streets these days, one of the first questions out of their mouth will likely to be, 'How many states have you got?' That’s because it seems like everybody is trying to conquer a U.S Super Slam, which is the shooting of a turkey in all 49 states that hold a springtime season...only Alaska does not. It’s a relatively new goal in the sport, having first been recognized by the NWTF in 2011, and they’ve had just 173 enrolled in their record book. However, paying to register the feat costs a good bit of money which could be better used for buying turkey calls and other hunting gear, so the 'official' tally doesn’t accurately reflect the burgeoning nationwide interest in pursuing this goal, nor the number of people who’ve already attained it. One such hunter is Tom 'Doc' Weddle, from Indiana. Not only did he finish up his first Slam way back in 2006, but he most recently completed another in 2024, making this elite turkey hunter one of the very select few to have done the deed multiple times. Now, hold onto your hat here, because Weddle has also racked up an addition three others...giving him an unprecedented FIVE U.S. Super Slams! This book details his springtime travels of 2019-2025, as taken from Doc’s personal hunting journals. Doc Weddle is uniquely qualified to write about wild turkeys because of how much they’ve been a part of his life over the last 43 seasons, as well as for the things which he’s achieved in the sport, but this book (his fifth) also serves as a deep-read into the complexities and motivations of a hunter who has seen and lived through the greatest gamebird reintroduction in the history of the world. He’s one of those pillars in the sport who’ve 'been there; done that' and has the t-shirt to prove it. Heck, Doc probably screen printed the shirt, himself! So, come take a ride with this man as he reminisces about hunts past and waxes poetic about what the future might hold. Doc’s life makes for an interesting read, but you’re also bound to learn some things along the way. One way or another, I can guarantee that you’ll be entertained from start to finish!
