O livro é fruto da pesquisa da autora que resultou em sua dissertação de mestrado em Filosofia pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Discorre a respeito da obra do filósofo Emmanuel Lévinas e alguns de seus principais conceitos. Busca ratificar a importância de seu pensamento nos dias de hoje, tendo sua vivência da II Guerra Mundial como fio condutor. Considera-se fundamental este estudo, uma vez que situações de extrema violência (real e/ou simbólica), aniquilação e genocídio em nome de diferenças as mais variadas foram e ainda são uma realidade. Emmanuel Lévinas traz justamente a Ética como filosofia primeira, propondo uma primazia desta em relação à Ontologia. Além de Lévinas, compõem a pesquisa recortes e citações de diversos autores a respeito do tema a fim de fundamentar as ideias apresentadas. 10
