Die durch Tsetsefliegen übertragene Tier-Trypanosomose stellt nach wie vor eine große Herausforderung für die ländliche und landwirtschaftliche Entwicklung in den westlichen und südwestlichen Teilen Äthiopiens dar. Schätzungen, die vor Jahrzehnten durchgeführt wurden, deuten darauf hin, dass eine Gesamtfläche von 220.000 km² von verschiedenen Arten von Tsetsefliegen befallen ist, wodurch das Vieh, das in diesem Gebiet gehalten wird, einem unterschiedlich hohen Trypanosomose-Risiko ausgesetzt ist. In dieser Arbeit sollten die ökologischen und klimatischen Präferenzen bestimmt und das potenzielle Verbreitungsgebiet der wichtigsten biologischen Überträger von Trypanosomen in Äthiopien, nämlich Glossina morsitans submorsitans, Glossina pallidipes, Glossina tachinoides und Glossina fuscipes fuscipes, . Das Ergebnis zeigt, dass mehr als 140.000 km² ansonsten landwirtschaftlich nutzbares Land im Westen und Südwesten des Landes potenziell für Tsetsefliegen geeignet sind. Mehr als zwölf Millionen Nutztiere in Äthiopien sind dem Risiko ausgesetzt, sich mit der durch Tsetsefliegen übertragenen Trypanosomose zu infizieren.
