Trophy Education examines a growing contradiction in American education: while national academic indicators such as NAEP and ACT scores have steadily declined, school systems increasingly celebrate athletic success as a central measure of institutional pride. Academic improvement and progress are framed with numbers and letters that are palatable, not transparent, to the public. The art of teaching has been put on the back burner to curriculums and sports coaches who teach. The book argues that the culture surrounding school athletics has quietly reshaped priorities in many schools-often to the detriment of academic rigor and student development. The book concludes with practical solutions for restoring balance between athletics and academics in K-12 schools.Published in the fall of 2026, the book focuses on American academic achievement from the early 2000s to the present citing NAEP, ACT, and individual state assessments. Trophy Education specifically highlights Louisiana, which is widely lauded for leading the way in educational reform. Moreover, Trophy Education juxtaposes Louisiana’s acclaimed academic growth in 2022 and 2024 on NAEP with its passion for athletics-concluding that athletics has become the real priority in education for the Pelican State.Stephen and Devon Melville are teachers in southwest Louisiana with over 30 years combined experience in the classroom. They’ve experienced the influence of athletics on academics firsthand, along the waves of teacher shortages, mandated curriculums, and one-size-fits-all approaches to teaching future generations. In their five-step solution, they demand a re-alignment of priorities in America’s education system: one that is centered on academics, individual students, and great teachers.
