Os sistemas CAD estão a ser amplamente utilizados por vários engenheiros, profissionais e empresas como base para a conceção e elaboração de projetos para múltiplas aplicações. A maioria dos sistemas CAD tem o seu próprio formato de dados, mas o problema é que, para cada sistema, é necessário interpretar os dados de outros sistemas. O método mais eficaz a longo prazo para a troca de dados entre sistemas diferentes é a utilização de trocas de ficheiros em formato neutro, e vários padrões surgiram ao longo dos anos.
