Trials and Tribulations is a novel written by Theodor Fontane, a German author who is considered one of the most important realist writers of the 19th century. The book tells the story of a young woman named Effi Briest, who is married off to a much older man named Baron von Instetten. The marriage is arranged by Effi’s parents, who hope to secure their daughter’s financial future.Effi is initially excited about her new life as a baroness, but she soon realizes that her husband is cold and distant. She begins to feel trapped in her marriage and longs for the freedom she enjoyed as a young girl. When she meets a handsome young officer named Major Crampas, she is tempted to have an affair. As Effi’s relationship with Crampas deepens, she becomes increasingly reckless and careless. When her husband discovers the affair, he challenges Crampas to a duel and kills him. Effi is devastated by the loss of her lover and the ruin of her reputation. The novel explores themes of love, marriage, social class, and the constraints of society. It is a powerful and moving portrait of a young woman’s struggle to find happiness in a world that offers her few choices.Meanwhile Lena had drawn up a wooden chair near her old mother, because she knew that this was Baron Botho’s favorite place; but Frau Drr, who was fully impressed with the idea that a Baron must occupy the seat of honor, had meanwhile risen, and with the blue fleecy mass trailing after her, she called out to her stepson: ''Will you get up! I say, now. If there is nothing in him, it’s no use to expect anything from him.'' The poor boy stood up, all stupid and sleepy and was going to give up his seat, but the Baron would not allow it. ''For heaven’s sake, dear Frau Drr, leave the poor boy alone. I would far rather sit on a bench, like my friend Drr here.''This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
