Este libro trata un tema que hasta hoy no es muy conocido; tres jóvenes, las cuales tenían raíces en el Viejo San Juan de Puerto Rico al comienzo del siglo-XX logran impresionantes hazañas en el cine, teatro, y la televisión. Esto, cuando la diáspora puertorriqueña era muy limitada y cuando eran pocas las mujeres boricuas que se destacaron en la farándula fuera de su país.Dos eran chicas que a temprana edad dejaron sus familiares en el Viejo San Juan; así sucedió con Blanca de Castejón y Mapy Cortés. La familia de la tercera salió de San Juan en los 1920s y como consecuencia, ella nació en Brooklyn de Nueva York. Sin embargo, cuando era niña la familia regresó al Viejo San Juan en un intento de re-establecerse en la antigua ciudad; esta fue Olga San Juan. Después de varios meses, la familia San Juan regresó a Brooklyn.Las tres jóvenes vivieron en Nueva York en los años cuando la gran metrópolis estaba experimentando todos los efectos de la era conocida como la época del jazz o The Jazz Age (un movimiento estadounidense que impactó a muchos países del mundo). Seguramente, las jóvenes no estaban conscientes que se convirtieran en productos de aquel extraordinario movimiento.Aunque el movimiento jazzista se concentró en la música, otros aspectos culturales también fueron afectados. La ropa o vestuario de hombres y mujeres cambió significativamente. Las artes plásticas a través de varios artistas fueron marcadas. Producciones fílmicas y teatrales también fueron impactadas por el jazz. Pero más importante, cambió la manera de pensar y el comportamiento de mujeres y hombres. Las mujeres lograron apropiar derechos y libertades sin precedentes. Se desenvolvieron agresivamente en la política y obtuvieron el poder del voto en elecciones gubernamentales.
