Los modelos de democracia racial en Cuba y Brasil parten de un consenso cultural compartido por las ciencias sociales, el arte y la literatura. Travestismos culturales analiza críticamente estos modelos de consenso nacionalista y cultural, que se consolidan en las vanguardias latinoamericanas. a fin de evaluar la intersección entre raza, género y sexualidad en la obra de Fernando Ortiz (Cuba), Gilberto Freyre (Brasil) y varias novelas y ensayos desde 1840-1930. En el travestismo cultural  los cuerpos negros son el objeto del deseo, pero todavía se contienen desde la otredad de la ley social, literaria y textual.Jossianna Arroyo es profesora de crítica literaria latinoamericana, caribeña y de la diáspora africana en la Universidad de Texas, Austin. Además de Travestismos culturales (2003), que aparece aquí en su segunda edición, ha publicado Writing Secrecy in Caribbean Freemasonry (2013) y coeditado, junto a Elizabeth Marchant, Comparative Perspectives on the Black Atlantic (2012) y, junto a Lawrence La Fountain y varios autores, el volumen Puerto Rican Queer Sexualities para el CENTRO Journal (2007). Su próximo libro se titula Caribbeans 2.0: Media, Culture, Politics.
