The book of the relationship of occlusion to periodontal disease has long been one of the great mysteries of dentistry. It is generally accepted that plaque is the primary cause for the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Although necessary, the presence of plaque does not account solely for the varying levels of disease present among individuals. Systemic and local risk factors have been implicated in modulating the host’s response to plaque, thus affecting the course of disease progression. Occlusion effects are often listed among these modifying factors.1So, occlusion and local factors, may act independently or together in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Thus, an understanding of the principles of occlusion and its relationship to oral health and disease is necessary.
