Gli scienziati europei hanno sviluppato un metodo per convertire i grassi di scarto in combustibile di alta qualità. Questo offre una materia prima ideale per gli impianti di greasoline e può contribuire a dare impulso alle piccole imprese del settore. L’obiettivo del progetto 'Nuova tecnologia per la conversione dei grassi di scarto in combustibili di alta qualità' Greasoline era quello di convertire i grassi di scarto in diesel e cherosene. Il progetto, finanziato dall’UE, ha generato idrocarburi dagli acidi grassi utilizzando la pirolisi catalitica, un processo che consente di scomporre il materiale organico utilizzando il calore in assenza di ossigeno. Il catalizzatore utilizzato era il carbone attivo, che presenta alcuni vantaggi in termini di applicabilità, struttura e rigenerazione. La ricerca ha dimostrato che i grassi e gli oli di scarto di scarsa qualità contengono livelli elevati di acidi grassi e costituiscono una materia prima ideale a basso costo per gli impianti di greasoline. Pertanto, la tecnologia sviluppata dal consorzio può contribuire all’approvvigionamento di biocarburanti senza intaccare le preziose riserve alimentari. La raccolta dei grassi di scarto e la gestione degli impianti rappresentano un’importante opportunità commerciale per le piccole e medie imprese europee. La tecnologia può anche essere esportata in tutto il mondo per contribuire a ridurre l’estrazione di combustibili fossili dall’ambiente naturale.
