Campo de concentración de Bram (Francia), primavera de 1939. Mateo, un joven capitán del ejército republicano, está solo, enfermo, y su destino encadenado al de cientos de miles de españoles tragados por la vorágine de la incomprensión, la intolerancia y el rencor. Mientras observa la entrada de una remesa de exilados, recuerda la odisea personal que le ha llevado hasta allí. Se ve en el verano de 1933 junto a su maestro, don Saturnino, preparando el examen de ingreso a la Escuela Normal de Teruel para estudiar el Plan Profesional para Maestros que la II República Española quiere implantar. Durante tres cursos será feliz, formándose para su gran ilusión de dedicarse a la docencia. Sin embargo, sus planes se truncarán cuando, en el verano de 1936, las fauces del orco se abrieron para ensangrentar las tierras de España en una lucha despiadada y fratricida.
